Notary Public

Our Senior Partner, Bill Holohan, is a Notary Public. He was appointed in 2000, becoming the first Notary Public to be appointed for the separate cities and counties of Cork and Dublin.

A Notary Public is a public officer appointed by the Chief Justice and constituted by law to serve the public in non-contentious matters. This usually concerns foreign or international business. The acts of Notaries Public have worldwide recognition.

The Notary Public is empowered by law to:

  • Administer oaths
  • Authenticate documents.
  • Witness signatures.
  • Take affidavits, (other than for the courts in Ireland).
  • Take declarations.
  • Once a document has been signed by a Notary Public, it is sent to the Department of Foreign Affairs and it stamps the document with an Apostille. The Apostille is a certificate issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs verifying the genuineness of the signature of the Notary Public and it authenticates the notarial act.
